I've travelled to Broken Hill about 6-times now...sometimes for work and sometimes for leisure. We love the outback so it's no surprise that we have always enjoyed the journey...an oasis in the outback. Broken Hill has everything that you need in terms of shopping, services and accommodation. You will never be disappointed by the drive....and Adelaide is only 5.5hrs away!
Broken Hill is a great place to visit. Lots of history, great pubs & places to eat. Silverton is a must to visit as is The Living Desert & Sculptures & Pro Hart Gallery also. Visit the Info Centre - they will give you plenty of information. A car is necessary for sightseeing unless you are on an organised trip.
Great long established mining town with some great buildings. Pro Hart and Jack Absolom art galleries worth visiting. Aldi, Coles and Woolworths in town with great opening hours. If travelling to South Australia do not take fruit, vegetables with you as bio security laws prohibit these entering that state.
Variety of places to see: Silverton, Living Desert Sculptures, art galleries, Line of Lode for view and sunset. Great choices for dinner at the pubs and breakfast at cafes. A must - Outback Astronomy.
Only 3 full days but saw and did heaps, Recommend seeing the Living Sculptures, Royal Flying Doctor Base, all the pubs for good meals, Pro Hart gallery, Silverton and surrounds, Mines and Loades Memorial, Bells Cafe, Broken Hill South. See how many goats, kangaroos, horses, emus, donkeys and snakes you can see. If you want to go to Menindee Lakes you need more time.
We loved Broken Hill, the Line of Load reserve was awesome, The Royal Flying Doctors Service heritage tour was fantastic. Bells milk bar and retro home is worth a look. The daydream mine tour brilliant (you have to drive on a 12km dirt road to get there), Mad Max museum, old ghost town and heritage goal in Silverton were also fantastic, Recommend Astra Hotel for food, the staff were really helpful here.
