Set in Rishirifuji, 24 km from Mt. Rishiri, Shimanoyado Kamuirishiri offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. The 1-star ryokan is 13 km from Kutsugata Harbor. Beautiful room. Excellent location. Short walk to the Ferry and short walk to the onsen up the hill. The tatami mats with futon cushion makes for a firm bed! This is exactly what one should expect from a traditional Japanese room. Not a negative, just good to understand beforehand for westerners.
Rishiri (4.6 miles from Rishiri Airport)
Offering a shared lounge and mountain view, Rishiri Antique Inn is located in Rishiri, 27 km from Mt. Rishiri and 700 metres from Kutsugata Harbor. We have enjoyed our visit to Rishiri, and staying at Yuki’s Rishiri Antique Inn played a big part. The rooms are impeccably clean, the decor around the house is a curious blend of a traditional Japanese style and artful pieces from all over the world. I loved the maps hanging all over the house: our room featured a big Balkan map! Yuki went above and beyond to help us enjoy our stay. From picking us up from the ferry terminal, to a grand cookout upon our arrival and dining with fellow guests, to an island tour, to pointing out the best places to eat — he was indispensable in making our stay memorable. We were winded from a long journey and out of ideas for a tour, so he took it upon himself to suggest an itinerary. That’s how we got a double museum excursion, a marshland hike, and a visit to the best kombu locations around the island. Yuki even suggested a few places on Rebun and in Tokyo that might interest us. It’s not often the host of an accommodation is a weathered traveller himself, so he knows what to pay attention to. You can also rent e-bikes directly from the inn's warehouse. We planned a cycling trip around Rishiri, so that was a big plus. Two sturdy e-bikes were available, and strategically managing the assist level meant that we had enough juice for the entire island loop (56km). There’s a fabulous “golden” onsen just two minutes away. It has an open-air bath and a spacious inner hall. I highly recommend soaking there after a long day!

Wonderful countryside and mountain trails for hiking. No bears which helps. Interesting museums and Samurai history. We got stuck here longer due to rough seas and ferry cancellation - BUT who would want lo leave anyway?
