The hike up to the Caldeira was beautiful and it is quite a unique experience to spend some time on such a remote and tiny island. I also enjoyed strolling through the narrow streets of the town and visiting the windmills. The ecomuseum is nice if you want to learn more about the history of the island. Getting around the island is easy as you can walk everywhere, distances are very short. You cna get a taxi up to the caldeira if you are short on time or not a fan of walking.Guest review byNoraItaly - 10.0
Corvo island is a unique place.
Corvo island is a unique place. Geographically, on the edge of Europe, actually already on American tectonic plate. You need to take at least 2 or 3 flights to get there from Portugal, not talking about to get to Portugal. Flight getting cancelled because of the weather, as the island is right in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and weather for all Europe is "cooked" right here, above Azores islands. On 17 square kilometers lives about 400 people and 1300 cows. Island has one main road of 10km, 800m long runway for small Q200 planes for landing, 1 volcanic black sand beach, 1 ATM, 1 bank,1 policeman, 1 post office, 1 gas station, 1 church,3-4 places to eat and 2 hotels. Island got the first electricity and telephone in 1973, before that they use smoke signals to communicate with nearby Flores Island. Vila do Corvo is the smallest island capital in Europe, smaller city in Portugal, and the island itself is the northernmost and smallest from all Azores island. Nearest island is Flores 18th south, and then the distances to closest land rising in hundreds kilometers - 1900km from Portugal coast, 2000km from Canadian Newfoundland, 2100km from Moroccan coast, 2500km from Greenland coast and 4400km from the South American coast. Main attraction is a Caldeirao, collapsed volcanic caldera with lagoons, about 6 km up above the village, 3h walk up. Why choose Corvo? For its views, tranquility, greenery, birdwatching. trekking to Caldeirao, for its remoteness.Guest review byTomiCzech Republic - 8.0
An island which seems to survive from tourism.
An island which seems to survive from tourism. In the morning several boats come with tourists from Flores to take a van tour up to the crater and explore there a bit as a single day tour. We spent two nights on the island and both agreed that a single day tour seems stressful and makes it difficult to enjoy this quiet and secluded place. There is a hiking trail which takes roughly 4h to reach the crater, then explore there and either walk down the road or take one of the vans back. There is only one restaurant on the island which wasn’t so great. However there are also two food trucks where the locals go to eat and have a few beers. We tried one of them and were positively surprised.Guest review byJohannesGermany
