The staff were absolutely brilliant. They welcomed us last minute after a previous booking of another property fell through due to poor management. They provided every facility to check in late at night and free, safe parking space. The owners of the restaurant below the apartment received us with a big smile and treated us to some prawn crackers. That's how you run a business! Big contrast with respect to the previous property, which denied us check-in because we were slightly late after many hours of driving, unless we paid an absurd extra 50 quid. The decor was a bit tacky, but in an endearing, fun sort of way. Certainly not an issue. The apartment has several stairwells, though. That's something to keep in mind if you have reduced mobility. It wasn't a problem for my elderly mother in law, anyway.

The location was excellent, I booked the hotel in order to get a coach from the coach station very very early I'm the morning (just a short 12 min walk). The area was very quiet in the evening and there was no noise from other guests although the place was fully booked. Even though I was leaving before the breakfast started, the owner kindly said he would have milk, cereal and fruit for me to help myself to in the breakfast room. If I had stayed by the breakfast time, I was surprised to see they also served a vegetarian option of the full English breakfast which sounded very nice! The beds were very comfortable, and I stayed in a twin room, the pillows were all slightly different so I could decide with my mum who would take which pillows which worked out perfectly for us both. Although there was no air conditioning, we slept with the window open which kept us cool enough at night time in this hot weather we are having at the moment! I was also thankful there was an extra toilet in the hallway, so I didn't have to disturb my mother again after my breakfast, before leaving.

    Good accommodation in a pretty village. The breakfast was really nice (especially the bacon bap!). Great touches such as fresh milk in the fridge, dressing gowns and slippers. The information pack was full of local information and we especially liked the choices of walks that were detailed.

    The apartment is in Stoke Village which has a nice little shopping street. At the end of the road is a park with good views all around, and the street itself is leafy with some very nice buildings. The apartment is very well laid out and everything has been thought of. The hosts were attentive and friendly, and kindly let me drop off my luggage before the official check in time. I arrived in Plymouth by train, then took the number 33 bus from the train station to Stoke Village.

The Retreat is a hidden gem in the village of Colebrook, fully equipped, great facilities, self contained gardens and onsite parking, all set in an ideal location to explore the surrounding areas. It had everything we could possibly need and so cosy and comfortable, loved everything about this cottage - we will definitely recommend and will return.
