My recent stay at Charming Dark Lodge in River was nothing short of exceptional, marking it as the best homestay experience I have ever encountered. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that exceeded all expectations. The highlight of our stay was undeniably our incredible host, who spared no effort in ensuring our comfort and satisfaction. From delicious lunches and dinners to delightful surprises and the most mouth-watering fish barbecue - probably the best meal I have had in the two months I have been in Sri Lanka. Beyond the culinary delights, our room was a sanctuary of comfort and style. Immaculately clean, equipped with a kitchen containing everything one could possibly need, and beautifully built and decorated. Originally intending to stay for four nights, we found ourselves captivated by the charm of Charming Dark Lodge, extending our stay to twelve nights. Departing was bittersweet, as we had grown attached to the unparalleled hospitality and the tranquil ambiance of our temporary home. A particularly memorable moment was celebrating my birthday during our stay. Our host went above and beyond to ensure it was an unforgettable occasion, adding a personal touch that truly made me feel special. Without a doubt, if I ever find myself in Sri Lanka again, Charming Dark Lodge will be my first choice for accommodation. Everything! The garden, the bungalow with it’s private space outside to chill, the common areas where people got together to drink, eat or just chat… It’s also a 1 minute walk from the beach and literally 30 seconds from awesome coffe shops and restaurants. The hosting family is kind and will help you with anything you need. I had the chance to know more about them and how midigama has evolved in the past 40 years. It was really interesting and they are the sweetest people. Also, 2 great surfing spots just a few minutes walk from the bungalows. I will surely come back! Thanks for everything!

A lovely place to stay. Super clean rooms with an incredible fan (I hardly even needed the AC the fan was that good!). Lovely garden to sit in to have the delicious and filling breakfast that they make (changes each day! - banana pancakes, omelette, Sri Lankan string hoppers and curry - always served with fruit). Across the road/down a lane way from a beach you can swim at, walking distance to lazy right and a few mins tuk tuk to popular surf spots (Marshmelows, lazy left and Kabalana). The owners are so kind. I came in very late from my flight and they were up waiting. I organised a taxi transfer with them which was fairly priced and easy to spot upon arrival. The driver was great. The accomodation like many other in the area is by the train tracks but I would only hear this around 6:30am or later. Thanks for a wonderful stay :)

Fabulous boutique hotel with a great location right on the beach. Beautiful rooms , lovely pool and great staff everyone made our stay magical. Shout out to Roshan the chef, amazing food from breakfast to the dinners. We only had dinner once but they went out of the way to make sure as vegetarians we were well taken care of. Nihal the manager also made sure our stay was just perfect.

Lovely place to stay! Surrounded by coconut trees & so much wildlife. The room was spacious and clean, the bed is really big & comfortable. The property is about 7 min walk to midigama beach- so it’s a perfect location. Very quiet too! You cant hear any of the parties nearby in ahangama. Super sweet family that own the place! Loved it so much we extended an extra 10 days. Super recommend! Only thing to mention is sometimes the shower doesn’t go hot- wasn’t an issue for me but something to mention :)

I couldn't have asked for a better stay. This cabin is perfectly located - close to Ahangama junction and the beach but also quite and a little bit apart from the busy parts and noises. The host is very friendly and attentive and the breakfast is amazing. All in all it was a great stay and I wish I could've extended!
