Have had a great day wandering around the now beautiful city of Newcastle. My memories of this place from the 1970’s when we regularly passed through on the way to and from Sydney/Taree, were of a dirty, stinky, dark and dingy hole, with nothing to recommend it except the Hearties burgers and milkshakes that we could buy during rest stops. I came back during the early ‘90’s, and it still wasn’t much. Then in about 2005 I was here for an Early Childhood conference, and it was during the time that the Honeysuckle foreshore area was being redeveloped from the railway yards, wharves and warehouses, into the tourist precinct that it is now. Still not much to look at, because everything was boarded up and under construction. But now!!?? WOW!!! This city is beautiful. Still retains a lot of the old buildings, which have been beautifully restored and repurposed, but now also has a lot of new buildings. And parkland. Unrecognisable from the 1970’s. I enjoyed walking around the city and visiting the museums. The whale watching tour with Coast XP was a highlight. The Beehive at Honeysuckle is a great little cafe for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Really enjoyed visiting Newcastle, the locals were friendly, had some great meals at the restaurants in Adamstown shops, just a short walk from the Cosmo Motel. Beach like atmosphere with great beaches close to town. Lots of great corner Aussie pubs in each suburb. City Hall was great for the Musica Viva Concert, Blackbutt Reserve was interesting and scenic with many native animals and birds well displayed. We had good food and coffee at CorEat. What pleasure to sit/walk and observe the Hunter River from the Newcastle foreshore. Delightful beaches are in easy access. So too Newcastle inner-city area. Stockton (on the northside of the river is worth an excursion and reminder to "old" Newcastle. The team were amazing! We pre-booked parking, which was so easy and convenient with their valet parking.
