The Balcony of Europe
With whitewashed houses perched on rocky cliffs backed by the Sierra de Burno mountains, Nerja certainly has a picturesque setting. Other than from a boat, the best place to admire it is the so-called Balcony of Europe, a viewing platform overlooking the rugged coastline and turquoise waters.
Below the platform is a panoramic restaurant, and there are more restaurants and shops in the narrow town centre streets, as you would expect of a Costa del Sol resort. However, Nerja’s distinct character differentiates it from the high-rise resorts. Its relaxed feel and Blue Flag beaches attract families, and there are good diving spots off neighbouring Maro.
The town is spread over hills, and below one just outside town the Nerja Caves stretch for over 5 km. Concerts are held in one cavernous chamber.
A 19th-century, multi-level aqueduct spans a gorge to the east, while to the west the Rio Chillar cuts through rocks to form a waterfall. The nearby donkey sanctuary also houses the occasional other farmyard animal. Dating back to the 17th century is the Hermitage of Las Angustias, and El Salvador Church is on a square looking out to sea.
Booking.com’s Nerja accommodation includes luxury beach hotels, guest houses with pools, and cheap apartments with parking – particularly handy if you arrive by car from Málaga Airport.

Beaches in all shapes and sizes to suit everybody. Secluded or busy take you're pick. A bustling almost pedestrian town with quaint architecture and plenty of shops, bars and eateries catering to all tastes. In one week we sampled authentic spanish cuisine, an Indian curry, perfectly cooked steaks, Pasta, a traditional Moroccan feast an Irish breakfast and all manner of local tapas and sweet treats (There are also Chinese, Mexican, German, and Thai cuisines on offer too if you look around). Nerja still retains much of it's traditional spanish charm with many feasts, festivals and religious history on display for all to see and engage in. Nerja is a lovely resort.
Nerja is a lovely resort. We felt safe when travelling around the resort, although my wife fell victim to a pick pocket (but that is a risk in any city or tourist area). Going off season was also good as the crowds were acceptable and the weather was perfect for us - mid 20’s would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break.Guest review byPatIreland - 10

Nerja has a gentile and traditional feel, no bk or macdonalds here. Many nice beaches and coves, and lots of good eateries catering for all tastes. Very beautiful town which we have visited many times. Netja is like 3 small resorts in one place. Old town centred around the balcon has two small beaches and a cove, lots of shops and cafes. Walk 15 minutes east to Burriana and you have a large beach with waterworks and great fish restrauntes. This area is more modern and has a younger vibe, it has a different feel to the old town. Go west 15 minutes to Torrecilla and its different again. Several more family beaches and Tutti Frutti Square, the area for the young to dance rtill the early hours. A nice place to stay for a holiday , on the coast with plenty of different beaches and restaurants .It is more suited to the older , quieter generation ,not the stag and hens .Though there are a good blend of young and old .Nerja is fairly flat , so easy to walk around .It is always enjoyable to walk around the shops and try the different restaurants . The location is ideal for getting to both centre and beach- both within 10 mins walking distance! The staff were really friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. The room was clean and breakfast was lovely. The hotel room bathroom was so nice and it had an amazing shower! Pool area very small but perfect for us as we came in February so no one was really using it. The outside area has a lovely wee bar and seating area.
