This hotel is perfect if, like us, you love 'la France profonde'. It's simple but very, very peaceful: despite being located on a crossroads there was hardly any traffic at all, day or night. Stunning views from the terrace at the back. The patron was very kind and welcoming, he made us feel quite at home. He and the chef were able to accommodate my 'no duck for supper, please' request! If you need a restful, no-frills nightstop in the heart of the French countryside but very close to the A71 autoroute, you will not go wrong with La Croix des Bois. We will certainly return when we can.

Everything was special. The place, a converted farmhouse with barn, the garden area with vegetables and fruits we could eat. The spacious house is a successful combination of preservation of the past and stylish modernisation. The green area is habitat to many different birds. A quiet place with several tables for tea, breakfast, dinner... The hosts are incredibly friendly and helpful. Nearby a small town full of character and not far away impressive river gorges.

    Small family-run hotel/bed & breakfast. Room was modern and clean. Extremely nice and helpful staff, really calm situation in a small village, beautiful surroundings and good food. They also have a restaurant, they didn't serve the night I was staying there but the cook prepared dinner for me nevertheless – perfect. Really good for a stop in the region. Just a 25 minute drive to Saint-Pourçain. Really appreciated my stay.

    What a fabulous place. Of only three rooms in the inn, the accessible room was exceptional compared with any I have been to anywhere in the UK. As a wheelchair user, the hotel is superb. As a lover of good food, the hotel is also superb. It is in a very small village, next to a forest and the peace and quiet was so much appreciated.
