The Legacy of Legends
Southeast of Birmingham, Coventry is best known for the shell of its old cathedral, a poignant reminder of the damage sustained during World War II. Part of its northern wall joins the new Modernist cathedral, designed by Sir Basil Spence.
In the neighboring gardens, there are remains of an 11th-century Benedictine monastery set up by Lord Leofric. His wife, Lady Godiva, became Coventry’s greatest legend by riding naked on horseback in protest of her husband’s high taxes.
St. Mary’s Guildhall is built on part of the old castle, and Baginton on the city’s outskirts houses the reconstructed Roman Lunt Fort. Coventry Airport is also here, by the Midland Air Museum, where the exhibits include a Vulcan.
The Coventry Transport Museum has great examples of vehicles manufactured in the city over the years. Another point of interest are the canals north of the city's center, lined by historic buildings. Other attractions include the Warwick Arts Centre – the UK’s 2nd largest – and the Ricoh Arena, home of Coventry City FC. The Sky Dome Arena is an ice hockey and music venue, while the best shopping is found in Arena Park Center.

Parking can be a problem but I'd recommend Orchard Carpark or the Belgrade carpark. We had lunch at the Slug and Lettuce near the Cathedral. I spent three days in Coventry, and I was really impressed...
I spent three days in Coventry, and I was really impressed by the city and its people. Very friendly and as a pedestrian, the politest motorists I've encountered in a long time! The remains of the medieval city, the museum and cathedral, all worth a visit. I was really disappointed that the Priory Visitor Centre is closed. The Benedictine Priory is associated with Lady Godiva, so I can't understand why the council would let the excavation site and the gardens become so neglected. It was full of beer bottles and rats. I know attempts have been made to fund raise for the site so hopefully this will be resolved. My favourite place was St Mary's Guildhall. Such a fascinating step back in time. The cafe in the vaults- Tales of Tea- is superb. I had a cream tea which while not the cheapest was the most delicious thing ever! It seemed easy to get around on foot, although I did see lots of buses. The walk from the train station was short, and again, easy to find your way with google maps. I can also recommend a look round the beautiful Holy Trinity Church, just across the road from the cathedral. The 15th century Doom painting is a rare find, concealed beneath centuries of whitewash and now reinstated to it's very scary best!Guest review bySandraUnited Kingdom
