Apart from an unavoidable (old protected building) trek up and down the stairs with luggage, this hotel (and PS it IS a hotel, not motel - no cars around, and CERTAINLY no sheets that would cringe at the sight of a UV light) is superb. The welcome is efficient and relaxed, with hushed mood lighting in the beautiful reception offering immediate relief from the frenzy that York often presents. The rooms are small (opening large luggage is a little challenging unless it's on the bed) but spectacularly appointed, and the little luxe touches made me feel like Richard Branson had designed the space - buttons where they need to be, built-in lights in the mirrors that offer warm and cool lighting, heavy crystal glasses on the gorgeously decorated shelf, wonderful robes and slippers, stunning decor, and of course, with the room I chose, a very cleverly-designed (and music-playing) hot tub on the patio - along with nest chairs. This was exactly what I needed after a long two days of trans-Atlantic travel and sightseeing in York. I almost cancelled the next part of my trip to stay on because it was THAT good. The cocktail bar and restaurant were also impressive, and obviously also beautifully decorated. Service throughout was friendly, helpful, and just overall, very 'hygge'. I will be back - especially since they offer returning-customers some extra benefits. Oh, and it's location made it an easy walk from the train station and PERFECT as a central base for sightseeing around York. You're right in the middle of it. Highly recommended.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Busy as it was a race weekend.

Busy as it was a race weekend. Advise if not there for the races avoid race weekends. Makes it very busy and a little rowdy. The city is beautiful though. So much history, so many landmarks and museums. City Centre is compact and nothing is far away. Great city to walk. Loved The Castle Museum and the walk up the tower in the Minster. The Minster is stunning inside and outside. Loads of quaint and quirky bars and restaurants. The Olde World streets are fantastic. Loved walking the city walls too.

At first we took a ride on the hop on hop of bus which orientated us. After the hustle and bustle and teaming crowds of London York was a delight. The town is replete with history. Visitors will enjoy its charm, slower pace and historical architecture.

A beautiful, fascinating central old city. So walkable.

A beautiful, fascinating central old city. So walkable. So ancient. So much history. Great food, pubs, and architecture. We took a number of walking tours, both around town and in the Minster, and highly recommend doing that. The behind the scenes tour of the Minster's Chart House was amazing. The Mad Alice/Lady Peckett tour was funny and full of historical oddities. The AVG free guided tour of town was awesome.

The general ambience of this ancient city is lovely, bustling but not too busy. Plenty of attractions, the railway museum is excellent as is the Castle museum. The nearby Army museum is also very good. There are so many things to do both indoors if the weather is inclement and outdoor such as walking the Roman walls. The city itself is near to the railway station and as the terrain is quite flat it is easy to walk round.

The staff were very friendly which made a big difference. Good value for money considering you can use the spa facilities. The buss stop is a 2 minute walk with direct access to York city centre. Busses run twice an hour. Didn’t eat at the fat Abbott but would recommended the Thai beside the bus stop. Good selection of hot and cold buffet breakfast at hotel. The room was serviced after one day with new towels provided.

Amazing hotel absolutely loved it. Prime location in York city centre. Stayed in the librarium room and felt as if I was transported back in time. The atmosphere in the hotel is something special. The entrance is by code and I preferred this. Enchanted music playing in the hallway added a nice touch when walking to room. Just fantastic .
