England Through The Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

The Minster guides and guided tours are really helpful and informative. They point out all sorts of features one might miss otherwise. Go to see the Treasurer's House behind the Minster for a quirky and interesting house tour, lovely garden and a nice cafe with good soup and scones. The Merchant Adventurer's Hall right across the road from our rental property was new to me and well worth a visit with a nice not too crowded cafe and garden too.Guest review byJ LUnited Kingdom - 10

We visit York on a regular basis as it has a lot to offer lots of history and fantastic places to visit beautiful churches and the minster the walls are delightful to walk round getting a different aspect of the city. Some great pubs with such character and history lots of different eating places to meet everyone's needs. loved the tours all experiences are fun and informative. Great shops and a nice traditional market. got places for all ages to visit. We love to walk along the river and enjoy the boat trips and ones to enjoy a meal on. Loved the vibe and the history of York. Tour bus in my opinion not worth the money unless you have a full day to really make the most of the hop on hop off part. We ate at ate late and it was absolutely lovely. Would book though as we were very lucky to get a table.
