Not for everyone. Don't go there if you like noise, night clubs, loud music and so, If you look for calm and silent place - it might be your golden target. First trip to Croatia, and glad we chose Hvar Island. Stayed walking distance outside Stari Grad, picked location as quieter than Hvar town. In hind sight would stay first few days in Stari Grad and finish stay in Hvar town to be closer to port. Looking nice, but strange that after 23h everything is sleepy....restaurants and caffes are closed after 23h, and shop is working till midnight. A wonderfully walkable and friendly place, with a rich history and vibrant atmosphere. At any given time there are small vessels moored from around the world, alongside the picturesque wharf lined with outdoor cafes and gelatories. Good location as a base.
Good location as a base. All the great beaches are closer to Stari grad. City of Hvar is definitely the nicest but cities like Jelsa, Vrboska and ofc Stari grad are having their own charm. Speaking of restaurants in Stari hrad, I would recommend Barba Luka. One of the greatest fish meals I had so far...and staff is excellent. It's quiet but still full of action.
It's quiet but still full of action. A lot of restaurants with different dishes and different kind of music. Some even with live musicians. There is a great plaza in the city covered with micro-blazes that shoot tiny drops of water producing refreshing fog. Kids loved it. Big sidewalk along the sea allows for great night walks. The city beach is fairly nice, clean water and normally crowded. Great vacation for family with kids. Perhaps not so good for partygoers.Guest review byMilanSerbia

Additional bed (sofa) for the kids was very comfortable too. Position in quiet area, which we liked. Stari Grad is well worth staying and it has its own charm and beauty, in different way than island's most visited town of Hvar which is always more crowded. Stari Grad is a nice place to stay and discover Hvar Island. Peter (the tenant) is really great and we had a warm welcome and a good dialogue all along our stay. (recommendations for the lovely places to discover, restaurants, ... and some fresh & tasty tomatoes from his garden !) The apartments are simples but confortables.
