Setting the Standard
Bali’s oldest beach resort retains its reputation as a glamorous alternative to nearby Kuta. The coastline of Sanur has a long stretch of white sand lined with restaurants and bars. It is tailor made for chic clientele or families wanting to relax in an exclusive resort or villa without the need to party into the wee hours.
Sanur is also a popular day trip destination for tourists staying in Kuta looking to do some water sports. There are many companies offering diving along its submerged outer reef, jet skiing on top of its blue waters or paragliding in the cool breezes above this ocean paradise.
The shoreline features a cycle path that is also perfect for walking and jogging. At its very northern tip is the ferry terminal that offers boat trips to Nusa Lembongan, a small island off the southeast coast of Bali that is famous for its laid-back atmosphere.
Sanur has its fair share of markets providing an impressive range of artistic handicrafts such as wood carvings and batik paintings. Best of these are the Sindhu Market and the daytime beachfront market.
Sanur is the closest beach to the island’s capital, Denpasar, with its many temples and museums. Booking.com has a range of hotels along Sanur Beach or close to Ngurah International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport.

Less busy than some of the other resorts , the beach is pleasant with plenty of shade and sun lounges. There is a lovely paved beach walk which stretches for about 4 km, along which there are bars and restaurants, bike hire is available along this stretch. This is preferable to walking along the pavements with their usual Bali trip hazards and death-traps! At time of writing both sides of the pavements were being dug up and man-sized holes installed every few metres!!! I would definitely choose Sanur over the crowds and mayhem of Seminyak/Kuta/Legian. I like the Sanur area of Bali for its combination of beach front activities and shops / cafes. Due to traffic, it can be a hectic drive from the airport, but in my opinion with the challenges of getting there. Additionally, Sanur is near the ferry dock for access to offshore islands (Nusa Penida and the Gili islands). Sanur area has both quiet and more busy parts to it. Lots of eateries, from very affordable Warungs up to the more expensive resort restaurants. Several beaches with locals and not just tourists. Shopping ,consisted of the many small stalls, also Icon Mall and the Sindhu Beach market. Unfortunately rubbish , especially plastic is a real problem, which needs prompt attention, otherwise it will be soon out of control. Sanur offers a much quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to other areas in Bali, making it a great choice for those looking to escape the crowds. The area seems to attract a more mature crowd, with many visitors from Europe, which adds to the laid-back vibe. There are plenty of great hotels and lovely restaurants to choose from, making it a comfortable and enjoyable place to stay. We chose Sanur this time because we were spending five days on Nusa Lembongan, and it was a convenient spot for that. One downside is the traffic, which can be quite hectic if you're planning to explore other parts of Bali. Also, during our stay, there were roadworks and footpath upgrades underway, which made getting around a bit difficult — but that’s only a temporary issue and should improve soon.
