Small town with awesome history, from Sean's pub to Maisies (live music) to the Viking riverboat (we had some "real" Vikings come on board which took the whole ride to a new level! This is my third trip to Athlone, the reason being to visit a friend from my U.S. days, who was staying with family. There is much to appreciate about Athlone, it has a lot of character. There are plenty of shops and two shopping malls. There is a good train service to/from Dublin and onto Galway, stopping in between. There is a bus station adjacent to the train station. You could travel on public transport thus avoiding hire car and driving. The river Shannon flows through the centre of Athlone, it is popular for fishing and sailing and walking. There is a tourist centre, and it is a lively place to stay. There are some good quality hotels. As someone who travels a lot, this was one of the more memorable stays I’ve had. The Princess 380 yacht is beautifully updated—sleek, clean, and really well thought out inside. It had all the comforts you'd expect, but with the added bonus of waking up on the water. The location in Athlone is spot on too—easy to walk anywhere, yet it still feels like a peaceful little hideaway. Tea/coffee making facilities were provided when asked for along with bottled water. The hotel is literally just round the corner from the station/bus depot. I arrived late but the people in the adjacent restaurant/takeaway were very accommodating. I was even able to get a meal as they were open until 11pm. Even has outside power to charge my electric car overnight. Perfect for what we wanted as attending a function in a nearby hotel. A little remote but still only 10 mins from Athlone. Our host was very friendly and helpful. He even offered to drive us to our venue. I left my Kindle reader behind and he even offered to drive halfway to return it, a 100klm round trip!. The house is beautiful. Lovely clean room, with a very comfortable bed and great breakfast. The accomodation is 10 mins walk from the centre of Athlone, where you will find excellent food and the oldest pub in Ireland. Good music, craic and of course Guinness can be found in Sean's Bar.
