Matera is incredible and a highlight of our trip to Southern Italy. We spent 2 nights there which was the right amount of time to fully explore the Sassi and the caves in the valley. There are lots of beautiful restaurants and sights to see. I highly recommend staying somewhere in the Sassi - you will not forget it! Matera is very hilly with lots of stairs and cobblestones so we stored our suitcases in a luggage facility near our carpark and just took an overnight bag for our 2 night stay.Guest review byKasNew Zealand - 10.0

The Sassi is a must experience in your lifetime place!
The Sassi is a must experience in your lifetime place! A TukTuk tour is best if you have mobility issues as did a family member. The local wines and cuisine Materana are delicious and Restaurante Stano is a very good choice for an elegant evening out. Get up early and walk around the circumference of the Sassi before everyone else gets there, it’s magical. Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words.
Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words. Yes, visually it’s breathtaking. There are photo opportunities around every corner, but take the time to walk the laneways slowly and really appreciate where you are. There are lots of stairs but there is no hurry to be anywhere so take a leisurely pace, stop for a rest, a meal, a drink or a gelato at the many cafes and restaurants.
