Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

Naples is vibrant, hectic, chaotic in parts, but enormously atmospheric and beautiful. The traffic needs care if you are a pedestrian. The history , architecture and people are exhilarating. The art and food are amazing. Throw in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum nearby, what more could you want? The local trains an busses make getting about easy. This city is so different to any other Italian city we have visited before. It’s a bit rough round the edges and the graffiti is everywhere but look beyond that and enjoy. Naples is one of the few European cities I did not exactly fall in love with. It is crowded, noisy and dirty. However, they do indeed offer some of the best pizza and pasta I ever had, if you follow good recommendations. The archeological museum was well worth the trip and our main reason to go. We also loved the subterranean tunnel tour, the veiled Christ sculpture and of course the magnificent Pizza Margherita! There’s a definite energy vibe in this city. Naples is a large city with a lot of car and scooter traffic. Getting around the city may be overwhelming at first but once you learn how to travel on the Metro train system it gets much easier. The trains & stations are clean & safe & signage is clearly posted. The restaurants in Naples are excellent and are very good value. The pizza is AMAZING! Naples is also a great place to stay if you want to visit Pompeii, The Amalfi Coast, Sorrento for day trips. The apartment itself is very nice, Versace tiles and wallpaper is a nice touch when staying in Italy. The location is excellent. If you want to stay out of Naples centre, this area is lovely, pedestrianised, and has families walking out until 11:00pm. It’s so nice. The lift is entertaining, part of the quirks of being a local.
