The Jewel of the Amalfi Coast
Positano is a colourful Italian town in the Campania region, near Naples. Overlooking the turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, this seaside paradise is home to traditional terracotta houses on a steep hill and a small marina with fishing boats.
Set on the Amalfi Coast, between the Lattari Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the holiday resort of Positano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient Roman architecture. Featuring white, pink and yellow houses, this place will amaze you with its pebble beaches and narrow streets with little steps.
Built in 1920, the old church of Santa Maria Assunta with the imposing dome is one of the main landmarks of the city. According to the legend, sailors brought the Byzantine icon of the Madonna after their ship got stopped in Positano and heard a voice saying ‘stop, stop, stop’.
The village of Montepertuso is a place 1000 metres above the sea level, with a stunning rock.Travellers can also take the ferry to Capri and Ischia.

Love Positano, our second time visiting. However, very crowded in September and can be overwhelming. Great place for a few days, especially when planning to explore nearby towns, including Capri. The area is lovely. But way too may stairs to climb with luggage. Google was the worst so we doubled the stairs. The beaches are rocky. Streets are cobble. It’s a terror on the feet. I feel like the travel writers way over rated these areas on Amalfi coast. Way a lot of tourist in late Oct. Basically all the shops carry the same stuff. Go to one and you’re done. Yes I’m glad I came and it was short but a boat ride to visit them all in a day or 2 would be enough!! The best place I ate was I stopped in a deli. The food was great! Bad thing is there is no place to sit. It’s stand and eat. But the owners were very accommodating! Not at all very gluten free, dairy free of night shade free. But u can get by. Town is most beautiful seen from the sea or a high terrace. Friendly people. Gets overrun by tourists, even October. Lots of hills and steps, and taxi’s are a flat rate of 35 euros, adds up fast. Better to walk and avoid traffic jams. La Pergola on the beach for pizza, also for spaghetti and clams. Ohima for great vibes and good food. Il Pallazo for special evening. A wonderful stretch of coastline despite the local drivers! Other main hazard the lack of parking places - particularly appreciative of the private parking space at our house. Despite that, accessible to Pompeii, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri etc. all of which we visited in our four night stay. Positano is a total zoo!!!
Positano is a total zoo!!! The alleys are jam-packed with people and lined with shops selling tourist junk. The roads are extremely curvy and hazardous to walk on (shoulders are about 6" wide). From the time that we arrived there…. They went out of their way with info, gave free shuttle service daily to and from town. We drank coffee on the terrace and watched the boats every morning. Positano is all stairs but you're so close to the beach in this property that the stairs feel manageable even after a day in the sun. Maryse is delightful and has great recommendations - we ate at Max on her advice and it was the best meal of the whole two weeks we were in Italy.
