Karuizawa is a little gem "off the beaten track" for mist travelers to Japan. A tourist loop bus makes it easy to explore. There are coffee shops, restaurants, shops, & onsens. Excellent hiking too! We had a good time at the Ski Resort and the Shopping Outlets and plenty of Food Choices. We were able to hike going to Hoshino Olsen and also had a wonderful breakfast in the area. We spent a couple of nights here so my kids can do a ski lesson on one of the days. One could certainly choose to take a day trip from Tokyo for such an activity. However, we wanted to get away from the big city that is Tokyo and it was such a lovely experience. By some stroke of luck, it started snowing as well so that's a bonus for my kids. Around the train station and at the Prince hotel 'mall' there is a 7-11 and a number of restaurants that are pretty good. We did not manage to visit the falls unfortunately. Karuizawa offers an amazing small town charm with excellent food, friendly people, and accessible nature. Definitely check out the Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel tour to view Musasabi! Bus around Karuizawa tourist spots are outside. It is also literally at the entrance of the old Ginza street which has great snacks. If needed, the hotel can also drive 5 mins to the Karuizawa station where you can do all the shopping at the outlet. 2. Great staff. Very polite and very helpful 3. Good breakfast. 4.
