A very pretty little town on Lake Te Anau, with the snow covered mountains of Fiorland National Park as the back drop. Plenty of eateries many right on the lake. Supermarkets and specialty shops. Beautiful walks. Hiking trails if you're looking for that. Jaw droppingly beautiful scenery everywhere. A 2 hour drive to Milford Sound or take a bus tour. Tours from Queenstown stop off in Te Anau to collect passengers & drop back on return trip. This was what we did and it was so much easier than travelling all the way from Queenstown. Te Anau is a beautiful town, set on the shores of a lake, with close access to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The main shopping centre offers lots of different restaurants and take away options. What a delightful little town! The glow worm caves were an absolute highlight, especially with the stunning waterfall inside—such a magical experience. The town is clean, walkable, and full of charming little shops and scenic walks. Plus, the grocery store was top-notch for anything you might need. We ended up staying at the Tasman holiday park, the bed was so much more comfortable and the manager there was so lovely. Te Anau was a great spot to see the glow worm caves, which was our highlight and we drove to do the Milford sound and it was a beautiful drive, which took about 2 hours both ways. There’s some lovely cafes and restaurants, gift shops and supermarkets. The bird sanctuary to se the Takahe was also a great stop.Guest review byJacqui - 10.0

I really enjoyed our stay in Te Anau. It's a beautiful town. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Great location to stay for a night or two if you are going to do the Milford track or do any of the attractions in the Milford Sound and surrounding area. I would definitely stay at the @Radford on the Lakeside. Lovely motel and very nice rooms. Have dinner at the Fat Duck (Lumina lamb dish was delicious). Breakfast and lunches at Sandfly. Te Anau is perfect for a weekend break and is ideally situated to access Milford Sound. The drive to Milford is memorable even without taking a cruise, the cruise is well worth it. The room maybe wasn't quite as clean as my wife would like, but it was not horrible either (she's picky). Strangely, the bathroom has been recently updated with a very modern motif, while the rest of the unit looks average, definitely not updated. Kitchenette was fine with a double stovetop, and the other kitchen aspects were good. Location was fine also, but then Te Anau is pretty small! We reached the hotel in the late afternoon and check-in was very comfortable with the lady taking time to help us plan our next morning drive to Milford Sound. She shared all required details and guided us to the parking and other facilities in town, which are all walkable. We were able to enjoy the early breakfast at 6 am before leaving for Milford Sound by 6:15.
