25 solo travel safety tips

When embarking on a solo adventure, thorough preparation is the key to a safe and enjoyable trip. If you set yourself up for success before leaving home, you’ll be ready for whatever comes your way.
Here are some solo travel safety tips you need to know before you go:
Research your destination ahead of time
This may sound obvious, but you will really need to do a deep dive into understanding your chosen destination and make sure it is safe to travel. Check your government’s latest travel alerts for your destination, research local customs, know which areas to avoid and transportation options and learn key phrases if there is a language barrier.
Create your itinerary
After you decide where you want to go, start planning your itinerary. Look up activities, local events, landmarks and things you want to do on your trip. The more detailed your itinerary is planned, the less chance of any unforeseen hiccups.Of course, you can always have flexibility to your schedule. I like to leave a little extra time for impromptu excursions or last minute shopping trips.
Share your itinerary with loved ones
Before you go, send your travel itinerary, contact info, hotel reservation information and any other details of your trip to a family member or friends back home. Keeping loved ones in the loop is crucial for your safety.
When I travel alone, I always share my itinerary with a friend or family member. It gives me peace of mind knowing someone back home knows where I’m supposed to be. I also plan video calls to my family when I get back to my hotel each night as my little ritual – it reassures them and gives me company.
Choose your accommodations wisely
Whether you are staying at a 5-star resort or budget-friendly hostel, research where to stay and always read traveler reviews. Your accommodation choice impacts your safety and overall trip, not to mention peace of mind. Look for accommodations near public transportation, your activities and not off the beaten path. Make sure hostels are certified, house-shares are verified with super hosts and look for established hotel chains.
Book accommodations for two
The most common solo travel safety tip as a solo female traveler is to give the illusion that you aren’t alone.
When you book your accommodation, select the option for two guests. Most accommodations don’t charge for the number of guests – so, it won’t impact your budget. But it will create the illusion that you’re not alone.
Pack essentials, but pack light
When traveling solo, it is wise to pack light and smartly. Packing efficiently enhances your safety and mobility. I always make a packing checklist with everything from clothing to toiletries, medications, accessories and tech so I don't forget something. I also try to pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 54321 or the 123456 packing methods to master the art of folding and rolling and how to use packing compression cubes. Always check the weather at your travel destination to know what to pack. Some cities or countries may be in a completely different season than you! If traveling internationally, check if you need to bring outlet converters. Pack essentials and valuables in your carry-on bag.
Have all the necessary travel documents
Make sure you have all the paperwork and travel documents needed for your destination before you go. You may need to check each country’s policies if backpacking or traveling to a few destinations. Keep extra copies of these documents in a folder and digitally online.
- Valid passport (with at least six months before expiration)
- Visas – if required
- Gather travel insurance documents
- Copies of important documents

Navigating the airport and flight are just as important as upon arrival as you embark on your solo adventure.
Here are some safety tips to help you stay and feel secure at the airport and during your flight:
Research your airports
Whether this is your first time flying alone or if you’re a pro, knowing how to navigate the airport smoothly makes your journey much more enjoyable. Research the airport layout beforehand to familiarize yourself with the terminals and gates. Use pre-check online or on your airline’s app. From there, you can pay for luggage, pick your seat and make any requests or upgrades to your flight. Arrive early to avoid rushing and maintain situational awareness. Stay vigilant in crowded areas and limit the use of headphones until you are ready to board. Keep your luggage close and never leave it unattended. Breeze through security checkpoints by following TSA rules to avoid delays. Use official airport transportation services or pre-booked rides to get to and from. Bottom line – trust your instincts! If something feels off, report any suspicious activity to airport security.
Prioritize in-flight safety
Once on board and buckled in your seat, there are still safety protocols to follow. Keep your valuables close and try to use the overhead bin directly above your seat. Listen carefully to safety briefings and locate your nearest exits. Don't hesitate to alert the flight attendants if you feel uncomfortable with your seat neighbor. Whether on a long-haul flight or a quick escape, in-flight safety should always be adhered to.
Keeping safety at the forefront is crucial when venturing out on your solo adventure. Follow your itinerary so your family and friends know your whereabouts and use the knowledge you gained during your research.
Here are some essential solo travel safety tips to help you stay safe while exploring your destination:
Follow a few safety protocols while sightseeing
The best part of traveling solo is seeing and enjoying the culture at your destination. You can do whatever you want, when you want and on your schedule. The key to staying safe while sightseeing is always to know your surroundings and stay alert at all times. Plan your route in advance, share it with a trusted contact and stick to well-lit, populated areas – research where the closest police station is, just in case. Also, refrain from drinking alcohol heavily and use a crossbody purse or waist bag to keep your valuables close.
Be smart while using public transportation
Familiarizing yourself with the local public transportation enhances your safety while getting around. Research reliable transportation options beforehand, from subways to buses or taxis. Use reputable ride-sharing apps or licensed taxis and avoid no-name cars. Avoid hitchhiking or accepting rides from strangers and always keep your belongings in close range. Use transportation apps for maps and guides to each destination. It’s always good practice to arrange transportation ahead of time, especially to and from the airport.
Pick restaurants in busy areas

Dining and enjoying local cuisine are some of my favorite parts of traveling. Choose restaurants in safe, busy areas to ensure your safety while dining alone. I like to sit at the bar and talk to locals or the bartender – they know the best spots in town. Just remember to keep your belongings on you or at your feet. Be cautious about accepting drinks or food from strangers and cover your drinks with a napkin during bathroom runs. I always try to join a food tour if offered and travel in groups to local hot spots. You‘ll make new friends and get the scoop on all the best eateries.
Join a meet-up or group tour for nighttime activities
You can still enjoy the local nightlife and have fun while practicing safety protocols. Stick to well-lit, busy streets and avoid isolated areas. Consider joining group tours or meet-up activities for evening outings, like guided city tours to the best nightlife or catch a show or concert in town. I always meet like-minded people that I can meet up with again on my travels. Leave a note in your hotel room of where you’ll be and make sure you have your hotel’s phone number or business card on you. Have a plan for returning to your accommodations safely, whether it's a trusted taxi service or a licensed rideshare app. When you’re in for the night, lock all doors, including balconies.
Bonus tip: Buddy up! If you are staying in a hostel or meeting other like-minded travelers along the way, make plans to meet up and travel together!
Dealing with emergencies alone
Dealing with an emergency is never fun, but it’s especially nerve-wracking if traveling alone. Whether you get sick, lose your wallet, or are a victim of theft, something is bound to happen.
The key to dealing with any emergency is to be prepared. Familiarize yourself with nearby hospitals, police stations and other emergency facilities before you travel, just in case something happens.
Purchase travel insurance
When traveling alone, having travel insurance is crucial, as it provides you with financial protection and peace of mind in case of unexpected events. Look for policies that cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost luggage.
Have a backup plan for lost documents or passport
We’ve all misplaced something or lost something important when traveling. Before your trip, scan all important documents and keep them on a cloud drive or an app on your phone for easy access. Make multiple copies of your documents and always keep one with you. If you need help with a lost passport or visa, contact your country’s embassy immediately. File a police report in case anything is found and leave your contact number.
Health emergencies happen; don’t panic
If you get sick while traveling, don’t panic! Try to get some rest and stay hydrated. If you need a doctor, look for the closest urgent care facility or go to the nearest emergency room. Be prepared and pack a first-aid kit containing essential items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, antibacterial ointment, bug spray, pain relievers, allergy meds, hand sanitizer and any personal medication. It’s always wise to visit your doctor before international travel in case you need certain vaccinations. Stay updated on health advisories to inform yourself of any health risks or outbreaks at your destination.
Be mindful of theft or scams
Whether it is identity theft, pickpocketing, or a fake ticket scam, being a victim can be traumatizing, especially when traveling. If something happens, report it immediately to the local police and authorities. They may be able to retrieve stolen items or help with claims. Some key tips to avoid theft and scams are keeping valuables secure, carrying your wallet in the front pocket, or wearing a cross-body purse. Always use reputable ticket agencies or companies, stay alert and don’t leave bags unattended. Invest in an RFID-blocking wallet and use a VPN app for cybersecurity.
Leveraging technology

Technology has made traveling exponentially easier and safer in today's digital world. There are hundreds of apps for travel guides, meet-ups, safety and tools for keeping documents safe at your fingertips. Download apps that cover a range of important features for traveling. Most smartphones have built-in ICE (in case of emergency) features that you should set up before traveling. Simply add your emergency contacts and medical information that first responders can access.

Use social media wisely
Social media can be your best friend when traveling solo. There are hundreds of Facebook groups and online communities dedicated to solo travelers. I like to connect with fellow travelers ahead of time for advice, reviews and possibly even a travel buddy. You can also plan group activities, tours and other events to connect with locals and travelers.
While social media apps are great for connecting, there are also a few safety concerns to be prepared for. It's generally best to avoid posting on Facebook or Instagram that you're traveling alone. It can put you at risk by making it clear you're not at home and could be vulnerable to potential crime, especially if you share specific details about your location and travel duration. Of course, you’ll want to post a few cute selfies and pictures along the way; just refrain from mentioning you’re traveling solo and save the posting for when you are home.
Personal safety strategies
Your safety is always a top priority when traveling solo. Implementing some personal safety strategies will better equip you to handle any situation that may arise during your solo travels. Staying safe is about being proactive and prepared, allowing you to enjoy your independent adventures fully.
Trust your instincts
Your gut feeling is often your best defense. If a situation or person makes you uncomfortable, don't hesitate to leave or report suspicious activity. Your intuition is there to protect you, so listen to it carefully when you explore new places or interact with strangers.
Avoid pick-pocket temptation
Keep your wallet in a front pocket or use a cross-body purse. Don’t carry much cash or expensive items that could make you a target.
Maintain situational awareness at all times
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times by:
- Limiting distractions like headphones or excessive phone use
- Being conscious of who's around you and what's happening nearby
- Knowing your escape routes in any location you visit
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
Live like a local
Try to blend in as much as possible to avoid standing out:
- Research local customs and dress codes before your trip
- Learn a few basic phrases in the local language
- Walk with purpose – even if you're lost
Learn basic self-defense techniques
While you hope never to use them, knowing some self-defense moves can boost your confidence and preparedness. Consider taking a self-defense class before your trip.
Carry a personal safety alarm
A small, portable alarm is a lifesaver in dangerous situations. It will startle attackers and draw attention to you if you need help. Make sure it's easily accessible in your bag or on your keychain. There are even apps like Panic Button that can do the job.
Final thoughts
Some of my best memories have been of my solo travel experiences. I gained close friends, tried things I'd never do back home and gained independence. Plus, I got to do all the things I wanted to do and on my timetable.
