Property information

This property is a fully renovated miners cottage, incorporating a large backyard which backs on to bush land reserve. Just 5 minutes walk to the beach, it has a perfect location set off the main road (if you can call any roads in Catherine Hill Bay a main road). The home is environmentally friendly, with solar hot water, rain water tanks and gas cooking & heating and backs onto a native reserve. Enjoy the sound of the crashing waves and birds from the back veranda - the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon wine or your morning coffee and immerse yourself in the relaxing garden setting. There are 2 bedrooms, the Master with a queen bed and the second with a double and a single bed. The lounge room has plenty of seating for all with TV and DVD player. There is also a dining table to seat 6 people. The kitchen has been renovated with stainless steel appliances, gas stove, fridge and microwave. There is also a small gas BBQ outside for your use. This property has solar power and tank water and relives the history of the village but in a modern contemporary way. At the moment (winter 2023) the backyard is limited due to a recent installation of a new tank. Please be mindful when in the backyard not to bring mud or dirt inside. During this time the home may not be suitable for children due to this reason until the grass re-establishes itself. Thank you for your understanding over this period. Neighbourhood information

Catherine Hill Bay is a secluded and sleepy old mining village within the City of Lake Macquarie. Access is via a sealed beach road off the Sydney - Newcastle Freeway and the Pacific Highway. The beauty of the bay and the presence of the rusty iron and lifeless machinery is well known to locals and worth being discovered by others. Rows of 19th century miners' cottages, in a residential area known as Middle Camp in a gully surrounded by high hills, line the roadside. The village is named after the schooner "Catherine Hill" which ran aground there on 21st June 1867. Coal was discovered and mined by the New Wallsend Company which bought up the land, built a jetty and opened the mine in 1873. The coastal location facilitated shipment . The enterprise employed up to 100 men. Their cottages formed the basis of the township and still line the roadside. A post office opened in 1874. The mail was initially shipped in by the company's coal steamer, the Susannah Cuthbert. The township virtually ceased to exist until the Wallarah Coal Company opened up the mines again in 1889. the second 'Mine Camp' post office was opened 16 January 1903, and closed 31 March 1952.
