Set in over an acre of award winning gardens on the banks of the River Angas. The property is Heritage listed, built as a gasworks factory serving the town of Strathalbyn from 1860 until closure in 1917. The property was once an art gallery and then a restaurant before being renovated as house and guest cottages. The property now boosts three accommodations, the stunning two bedded (please note one of the bedrooms shares space with the living room), the former Managers Cottage, a cosy romantic one bedded cottage that was formerly the stables for the property and The Garden Suite, two bedrooms and is more contemporary decorated as this was once the commercial kitchen area of the former restaurant built in the 1980's, this apartment offers magnificent views across the gardens down to the river and has covered patio area.
All the cottages have aircon and heating, their own kitchens and dining areas. The Manager and Stables Cottages have two person spas and the Garden Suite has its own washing machine. If you need laundry facilities during your stay, we have a coin operated large laundry about 200 metres away across the road from us. The gardens have won best business garden many times and 2019 won Overall Grand Champion.
Our dream has been to own and manage a bed and breakfast, we finally found our tree change and are extremely happy and excited to share our beautiful home with our treasured guests. We both have left stressful corporate jobs and are living our dream. The gardens are my passion and although hard work it repays me with flowers and peace. Many trees including some fruit trees (shared with possums and birds). We have two grown children and three beautiful grandchildren as well as a spoilt cat called Holly, an equally spoilt English Staffy called Jake and the four chickens, who when in the mood provide us with fresh eggs. Jake is extremely friendly, loves people and a head scratch, however we do discourage him from entering the cottages (in case we host guests with allergies).
Strathalbyn is an Historic town and is particularly popular with people shopping for antiques, many shops devoted to antique items, there is also an Antique Fair held mid August every year. The town is charming and pretty with everything on hand including a large Woolworths for that essential grocery shop and plenty of excellent bakeries, pizza shops and coffee shops when you are done with shopping. The town also boosts 4 pubs and a wine bar, all within strolling distance from The Gasworks Cottages.
Strathalbyn is very close to a number of attractions, of course Wine tasting (drinking) is especially close to South Australia's heart and you will find some lovely wines at Langhorne Creek just 10 mins drive or you can visit the Barossa around 40 mins away, a beautiful drive through the rolling hills and orchards.
A Motor Museum on the High Street is well worth a visit.
The largest town to Strathalbyn is Mount Barker, here you will find all the major stores. If the beaches are more your style, visit Victor Harbour, Port Elliot, Middleton and Goolwa only a mere 30 minutes drive away. City and Airport are an easy 45 minutes drive.
