Vitré is a small town, quiet, with pedestrian streets, and with all the flavor of the representative "savoir-faire" or French art of living. And in this calm that surrounds Vitré, there is a lively atmosphere with bars, terraces, cafes and restaurants, scattered throughout a historic center that is a jewel of the Middle Ages.
It preserves beautiful examples of traditional Breton architecture: houses with the characteristic half-timbered houses (pans-de-bois), colored windows, balconies, arcades... A most captivating image. WHAT TO SEE IN VITRE
1. Vitré Castle
This imposing castle stands on a rocky spur overlooking the river La Vilaine.
It retains elements characteristic of medieval fortified enclosures: drawbridge, moat, large towers, parade ground ... The slate roofs of the towers give it a fantastic appearance. It was built in the 11th century and from then until the 15th century it served as a fortress. Given its location, it was a stronghold in the defense of the border between the County of Brittany and the Kingdom of France. The interior of the castle houses a Renaissance chapel and a museum.
2. Church of Notre-Dame de Vitré
The church of Notre-Dame is a must of Vitré. It was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
In its admirable facade pinnacles stand out, its artistic door is another element to highlight.
The interior is more sober, with a predominance of stone that creates a more uniform appearance.
3. Saint-Pierre's door/La poterne de Saint-Pierre
This medieval gate opens in front of the church. It is the only one that remains of the 4 that existed in Vitré.
4. Rue de la Poterie
The Rue de la Poterie is one of the most photogenic of Vitré. Its half-timbered houses with colorful shutters, as well as the arcades with numerous stores contribute to this. The most unique building is the "Maison de l'Isle". A house built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Vitré lived its commercial development.
