Impressive design and layout including mezzanine floors and original beams delight on first sight! Fully insulated, the open plan living area upstairs can be easily warmed by the two wood burning stoves in winter. The large garden including an oak wood is intended to be wildlife friendly; some areas are mown and some are left uncut to allow wild flowers to grow. A small pond in a fenced off area, hedgehog refuges and flowering plants protect and attract wild life; I do not use pesticides. The property is fully fenced to prevent dogs escaping. I have three dogs who are quite good but are not good with cats. If you bring a dog with you, please be prepared to spend a little while letting the dogs get to know each other. If your dog is untrained, please keep him/her on a lead.
A cot is available if requested.
I am an artist, I live and work at this property in a downstairs apartment. The main part of the house constitutes the holiday home.
Hi, thanks for your interest in staying at Katy's Barn. It will be your own private space during your stay. I bought the Barn in 2007 and the main conversion to a house was completed in 2010. I came to live here in 2017 after working overseas (In UK, Africa and Asia) as an Artist and Art teacher for many years. The barn is now my home and studio and some of my prints, paintings, handmade books and sculptures are on display around the house and garden.
In summer, the near-by Dronne river becomes a centre for water sports and activities when the warm weather encourages swimming and canoeing at St Aulaye, Aubeterre and Parcoul. Beaches are laid out and riverside restaurants open. At any time of the year, this is a lovely area for walking and bird watching and provides a convenient spot for exploring the Dordogne and Charente. Of the lakes in the region, Lac Jamaye is 10 Km away in the forét du Double. This is a quiet rural area, characterised by arable to the north and pasture and forest to the south. The garden is at its best between April and June.
