For over a century & a half La Bastide des Lavandieres has been a prominent feature in the small village of Canaules . Originally constructed in 1850 it has had a few different & diverse existenses during the intervening years . At various times during the 175 years or so it has been here the building has served the village as both a small hotel , a cafe & during the 50's & 60's - a chique French nightclub . Canaules is now a quiet village but during this period it was actually known as "The Saint-Tropez of the Cevennes" Among some of the high profile personalities who performed there was the French Elvis - Johnny Hallyday . He may not be widely known outside of France but he had over 50 years of a career in music & now even after his death in 2017 he is still one of France's biggest selling recording artists having sold in excess of 100 million records . Other famous French singers performed in Canaules also including Jacques Brel , Francoise Hardy & Charles Aznavour . So keep in mind during your stay that you will be sharing a space that was previously occupied by some of the most famous singers ever .

We began work on converting the Bastide into luxury apartments in early 2007 . We completed the project in mid 2008 . Because of it's age a lot of renovation work was required in order to retain the character of such a beautiful 19th century building . We are very proud of how it has all turned out and we look forward to sharing it with our many happy guests . We are an Irish family who love to spend time in the South of France

La Bastide des Lavandieres is on the cross-roads at the centre of the small village of Canaules, in the heart of the Languedoc wine producing region. It is located at the edge of the Cevennes national park and close to the medieval towns of Anduze, Sauve, and Vezenobres. Canaules is just 30 minutes from Nîmes & 1 hour from Montpellier . Ales which is just a 15 minute drive away has all of the shopping & entertainment options you would find in any city of it's size . It has a lovely river beach with evening entertainment during Summer . As well as Nimes , Montpellier & Marseilles which are all easily reached the Mediterrranean beaches on the coast are also within 1 hour drive . In Winter the skiing in the Cevennes is within reach also. The Ski resort of Prat Peyrot – Mont Aigoual is a 90 minute drive while the other Cevennes ski resort of Bleymard Mont Lozère is just a 2 hour drive away.
