This authentically restored beautiful 13th century house has two double bedroom suites and a spacious living area. With its winding lanes, maze of alleys and stunning historical houses and buildings, it is an ideal base for exploring this magnificent region as well as relaxing by, canooing and swimming in the beautiful and crystal clear (UNESCO biosphere status) Dordogne river which is only 1.5 km from the property.
The house is spacious and light with fluid, interlinked spaces giving a relaxed sense of easy living.
Striking features of the house include:
- An impressive and beautifully carved medieval fireplace.
- A Roman arch
- A large stone carved window
- Original and gently worn floor boards on both floors including a section of original hand made boards.
- A circular stone tower staircase rising from the entrance hall to the top of the house.
- Art deco glass ceiling lamp shades
- Original stone floor on ground floor including sections of pisé (long, narrow stones fitted together vertically) and impressively large ancient stone slabs one of which is a metre and a half long!
- A beautiful south facing view overlooking the historic roofs of the village, the Dordogne valley with its very fertile land (traditional crops including corn, walnuts, oilseeds, beans, kiwis, tobacco, grapevines as well as market gardens providing produce directly to the local markets), and the beautiful rounded and wooded hills on either side of the valley.
My children are the fourth generation of my family living in or near Saint-Cyprien in the Dordogne, my grandparents having moved here in 1969!
In the heart of one of the most beautiful, and still relatively unknown, medieval villages in the Perigord Noir, St Cyprien retains its authentic and down to earth atmosphere thanks to a predominately local population. In the heart of the medieval part of the village and only 50 metres from the centre, this holiday rental house is perfectly positioned for exploring all the historical and architectural beauty of St Cyprien as well as the network of small 'ruelles', narrow alleys and lanes. Treasure hunts and evening torch lit walks around the medieval quartier with guides describing historical background and aspects of the village are frequent in the summer (info in Tourist office).
With many of the best and most amazing touristic sites within easy reach (Sarlat, Les Eyzies, Beynac, Roque-Gageac, Domme, Le Bugue etc.), and the Dordogne river with its beautiful, uncrowded beaches and some of the best canoeing all just 1.5 km away at Le Garit.
Saint Cyprien also has a very popular and vibrant Market every Sunday and a smaller market on Wednesday during the summer months, both on the high street only a 3 minute walk from the holiday house.
Thursday evenings during July and August there is a Marché Gourmand in St Cyprien. This is an out-door evening food market with traditional French music or live acoustic music during dinner followed by a D.J. These food markets with music are also to be found in many of the surrounding villages on different evenings of the week.
Wine markets and evening 'world' markets are frequent during the summer months and the area is well served for flower markets, truffle markets (during truffle season) and antique markets.
