Neighbourhood information

The village dates back well over a thousand years. The original Anglo-Saxon name was Sidsterne, which is thought to mean “large estate”, from the Old English “sid”, meaning broad or extensive and “sterne” meaning property. The church of St Mary, one of Norfolk’s round tower churches, was originally an early mediaeval cruciform church with aisles and transepts but has since altered to its present form of west tower, nave and chancel. The chancel contains some outstanding curvilinear tracery windows. In the 16th century, Syderstone Hall was the home of Sir John Robsart, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, and his daughter, Amy, whose initials are still to be seen in the churchyard gate and over the entrance to the Norman church tower. The Crown Pub at East Rodham is under 5 minutes by car, along with a lovely village store. Syderstone is also known for its large common, which spans roughly 4 square miles and is rich in wildlife. The site is excellent for reptiles and amphibians, with seven species recorded. Woodlarks occasionally breed, and other notable breeding birds include lesser whitethroat. The Norfolk coastline is around 9 miles North or West of the property and stretches from Heacham to Wells Next the Sea, all within a very short car ride away. Fakenham is a bustling market town, around 10 minutes by car. Here there is an abundance of shops, places to eat, supermarkets, cafes, and even a racecourse. Along with a weekly market, you have everything you need here.
