Captains Cottage is in a line of cottages that were built in King Street for the Widow’s of the fishing disaster of 1843. On Friday 13th of January ten fishing boats set sail from Newcastle, a storm ensued and seventy three fishermen were drowned.
Forty six Newcastle fishermen were drowned leaving behind 27 widows, 118 orphans and 21 dependents. An appeal raised enough money to build twelve small cottages at King Street that is still known as Widow’s Row.
The area is quiet and scenic with breathtaking views from Newcastle across to St Johns lighthouse. The locals are friendly. There are two bars, eating establishments , a harbour and beach within a 0.3 mile walk. There is also a shop in the same area
