Rye itself is one of the best-preserved medieval port towns in England. The ancient buildings and cobbled streets of this former smuggler hotspot are frequently used as backdrop for period dramas for film and TV. Today, Rye is less rebellious, having transitioned from a thriving fishing town in the 19th century to a mini-cultural capital with an abundance of art and photography galleries. The charming Mermaid Street, the opulent Norman church of St Mary's, and Camber Castle - built by Henry VIII and found in the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve - are all must-visits. There’s an abundance of great pubs and eateries, including The White House cafe, The Standard Inn and Tillingham vineyard and restaurant just outside town. The cottage is located on a private farm lane with no through traffic. Rye station is a 10 minute walk away and offers frequent services to Ashford International which provides direct links to London (1 hour)
