Hope Cottage is situated in the heart of the pretty village of Chittlehampton with its beautiful church of St Hieritha, The Bell, an award-winning pub and the Chittlehampton Village Shop which boasts a post office, tea room, along with the onsite butcher. Our three-bedroom cottage sleeps five people comfortably in our king, twin and single bedrooms. All beautifully furnished, with crisp linen, carefully chosen artwork to compliment each room and plenty of storage space, along with useful USB sockets. Hope Cottage is your home away from home and we have provided everything you should need for your stay. The kitchen is fully equipped and features a lovely range cooker, microwave, fridge freezer and stove top coffee pots. We have restored the antique brick floor to its former glory and the kitchen is fitted with antique pine dressers and traditional slate surround Belfast sink. If you're looking for peace and quiet then Hope is definitely for you where you can hear a pin drop most of the time, day or night. IMPORTANT: We have no attached garden, if you are bringing your dog, you will need to pop them on a lead and take them out for regular breaks; a field is just up the hill. Please advise when booking if you are bringing a dog with you. We only accept small/medium size dogs and no dogs under 1 year old. No other animals permitted. Also due to the construction of the stairs we do not have a pressure fitted stair gate, however if you look up Trixi pet guard, we have a wooden, extendable barrier that you can place across the bottom of the stairs to deter little explorers. We have a courtyard which is a sun trap and perfect for somewhere to sit and while away the hours with a good book, or just up the lane you will find our away garden, where there is a garden table and chairs and BBQ. This is a perfect spot to watch the sunset over the valley. PLEASE NOTE CORRECTION TO BOOKING COM CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMINGS: Check-in is from 4pm and checkout is 10am.
Located in North Devon between South Molton and Barnstaple, Chittlehampton was in medieval times a thriving pilgrimage destination. On 8th July each year, a procession walks from the lychgate of the towered church at the top of the square to the site of St Hieritha's martyrdom. The well is blessed, and the procession returns to the church where her special hymn is sung and children lay posies of flowers on her tomb. Situated in the peaceful village of Chittlehampton, Hope Cottage is believed to date back to the 16th century when it was part of a tavern, The Rolle Arms', one of several pubs in the village that provided rest and sustenance for visiting pilgrims. Now there is just the Bell Inn, an award-winning family pub, with a great selection of ciders and gin. Make sure you book if you want to have dinner, it gets very busy. There is also the excellent Chittlehampton Village Shop and Tea Rooms, which provides a wide range of homemade cakes, meals, butchery and produce along with provisions from local suppliers. There are some beautiful walks around the village, the Cricket team plays on the pitch that is just up from the house, and local ceramic artist Roger Cockram's studio is also in the village. Chittlehampton is ideally situated for exploring this stunning part of the country with all its scenery, amazing beaches and rugged coastline. Take a trip to the Tunnels Beaches at Ilfracombe, surf at Westward Ho or Croyde. Spend a day looking strolling the lanes and shopping at local retailers in Bideford, go crabbing in Appledore or maybe even nip over the border to Cornwall and visit Clovelly, Bude or Port Isaac the home of Doc Martin. Instow beach is also open all year round for dogs.
