This is a year round destination for many activities such as cycling, walking, nature watching, visiting historic castles, abbeys and bustling market towns and pretty villages. Stroll along the Leyburn Shawl where it is said Mary Queen of Scots dropped her shawl whilst escaping from nearby Castle Bolton. Visit Castle Bolton, a 14th century castle, still privately owned. Further afield there are the historic castles of Middleham of Richard III fame or the magnificent Richmond Castle. There are some stunning waterfalls close by so make sure you visit the Aysgarth Falls or the highest unbroken waterfall at Hardraw. A treat for all ages is the Forbidden Corner in Middleham, a strange and wonderful place full of surprises. In the spring Constable Burton Hall and Gardens are awash with tulips and daffodils. For steam train enthusiasts, ride the Heritage Wensleydale Railway stretching from Northallerton to Redmire, a day out full of nostalgia. There are galleries aplenty and Lucy Pittaway and Mackenzie Thorpe have galleries in Richmond. Enjoy beautiful food at the many restaurants and cafes serving local Yorkshire produce.
