Jim is English, and used to walk extensively in the Lake District before he started guiding abroad in, amongst other places, Morocco and The Himalayas. Later he started a company, together with Tine, in Tanzania arranging Kilimanjaro climbs.
Tine is Danish, with a professional computer background, and a love of travel, and met Jim in Nairobi airport! She is also a keen cook, with a love of local and home made food.
When our two children came along we decided it was time to return to England, and what better place to return to than The Lake District.

Lowthwaite is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, only three miles from Ullswater with views of Helvellyn and Blencathra.
Our farmhouse is originally from around 1650 with the barn part added in 1763. When we bought Lowthwaite, it was no longer an active farm, and the house was in need of an all-over renovation. After several years work, we opened the B&B in 2009. We kept it as original as we could, adding the convenience of proper working heating and water system. The interior is now a eclectic mix of English, Danish and Tanzania furniture and style.
We enjoy a rich and varied bird life and have currently a couple of resident red squirrels living here.

Aira Force waterfall and Gowbarrow fell are just minutes away. Take our favourite half day circular walk there or just a short stroll to the waterfall. Enjoy a cooling dip in the beck in the summer, and see Wordsworth daffodils in the spring.
Ullswater is our nearest lake, and we think the most beautiful in the Lake District! Ullswater Steamers offer a different perspective of the lake and there are great walks combined with the boat trip. Reward yourself with afternoon tea by the lake shore.
Want something more challenging? Helvellyn and Blencathra are close by and can be climbed by Striding Edge or Sharp Edge. Less difficult routes are plentiful, and Blencathra is a particularly good mountain for less experienced or younger walkers.
Make it a Roman holiday! See the Roman fort at Hardknott pass on the Lake District's most spectacular drive, walk on High Street (part of the Roman road from Ambleside to Penrith), and take a day trip to the World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall.
Cultural highlights include The Theatre by The Lake, which has a high quality and wide ranging programme, whilst Wordsworth's attractions are nearby.
