Old Mill Cottage is five miles from Kelso, described by Sir Walter Scott as "the most beautiful, if not the most romantic village in Scotland." Home to the championship Roxburghe golf course and regular National Hunt race meets, today it retains much of its original charm with an interesting range of independent shops and a monthly farmer's market. Seven miles south of the cottage is the bustling market town of Jedburgh, which boasts the evocative remains of a 12th Century Augustinian Abbey, an imposing castle jail unique to Scotland and the 16th Century home of Mary Queen of Scots which reveals the fascinating but tragic story of her life. There are numerous other places to visit nearby, our favourites include a drive out to the Border Inn at the pretty village of Kirk Yetholm at the foot of the Cheviot Hills and a visit to Floors Castle, the majestic home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. Eckford is also just an hour's drive from Edinburgh and provides a good base for Edinburgh events. FISHING ON SITE The cottage has fishing rights on a stretch of The Kale Water, which runs close by, and provides an opportunity for guests to try their hand at fishing. The owner is a keen fisher and is happy to advise guests about trout fishing on the River Tweed and Teviot, both of which are within easy reach of the cottage.
