The Alms house is a listed bijou residence in the heart of the ancient town of Thetford. It is one of 6 identical houses built in the C17 by a philanthropist for the deserving poor. The houses were remodelled and extended in the 1990's to include a bathroom, kitchen and cosy upstairs bedroom. Our two Alms houses are simply and comfortably furnished with a large double bed (no 55 has the option of two singles). The lounge has a comfy 2-seater sofa, large smart TV and dining table, with seating for up to 4. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would expect to find and leads out onto a small paved garden, with outdoor seating. The shower room and WC are on the ground floor. The sofa converts to a small bed suitable for one adult or two children under 14. Bedding for the sofa bed and extra towels are provided for a small extra charge.
Please note that the stairs to the bedroom are very steep and are not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.
We do hope that you will enjoy your stay in the Alms House, and that you find everything as it should be. We live only about 15 minutes away, so please let us know if there is anything you need. Sandra and Piers
Thetford is a very ancient town and was once the capital of Norfolk. It abounds with historic ruins, along with more recent connections: it was the film set for the Dad's Army series. The C18 Black Horse opposite, combines an old fashioned pub with a good place to eat (Wednesdays to Sundays) in its comfortable garden dining area. There are plenty of places to explore locally, including Grimes Graves, Bressingham Steam Museum & gardens, Euston Hall, Pakenham Watermill, the Saxon Village and High Lodge. The mediaeval towns of Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham are well worth a visit, as is Norwich, which is only 40mins away.
