Borthwick Mains is a working organic beef and sheep farm, with some bee hives and horses too. Owners Jude and Phil guarantee a warm welcome. Phil is a Jazz saxophonist and Educator, and Jude farms, and has a background in herbal medicine. Their son Angus is 13 and is a judo champion!
The immediate area has the feel of a valley lost in time- the 15th Century Borthwick Castle stands 200 metres from the farmhouse, with the mark of Cromwell's cannonballs etched into the wall from the failed 1650 siege. The beauty and stillness of the value with the dramatic sense of history creates a rare atmosphere, and Currie Glen offers stunning walks from the front door. The wider area has loads to do- many places to walk, distilleries, ancient Yew trees, castles, walled gardens. Be wowed at Jupiter Art Land, entertain kids at East Links Family Farm, or choose between Mid and East Lothian's wide range of golf courses and numerous sandy beaches about 30-40 minutes by car. Then head into town to enjoy the huge range of cultural, historic and architectural attractions offered by Edinburgh, with great shopping and restaurants to boot.
From Gorebridge Station, over 30 trains run to and from central Edinburgh every day. The 25 minute journey whisks you into the dramatic vista of Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle, ideal for the Festival or Hogmanay. And the nearby A7 lets you get to most parts of the Borders, Central Scotland and Perthshire in about an hour.
