This former school building has been converted into a bunkhouse with a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, making it an ideal base for self-catering stay. The Old School House does not provide bedding, towels, or loo rolls – it is a basic self-catering accommodation for groups set in the heart of Eskdale, perfect for walking clubs, field study groups, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is not an ideal centre for young children as there are fire escape doors that cannot be secured and open onto a country road. Please note the building is an old building, so there are signs of age and wear which is why it is an affordable option for large groups. To manage expectations it simple and basic and a good alternative to camping. There is a shower block with male and female showers, not ensuite or private bathrooms as per the booking dot com description. There is a basic walled garden with grass at the rear.

There are two pubs in easy walking distance: the Boot Inn and the Brook House providing excellent food and atmosphere. Just 400 metres from Boot village, you’ll find two welcoming pubs, with the Bower House Inn and Woolpack Inn a little further along. While the accommodation is basic, the location is outstanding. Step outside and you’re within easy reach of the Eskdale Trail, Stanley Ghyll Waterfall, and even Scafell Pike — England’s highest mountain. Local activity providers offer everything from guided walks to family-friendly outdoor adventures, making this an excellent choice for active breaks in the Lake District.
