Located on the edge of the small hamlet of Hillersland, a short walk from Symonds Yat viewpoint and the River Wye, The Rock, a 16th century coaching inn, is set on the edge of the forest with many, beautiful forest walks. The peaceful grounds of The Rock ajoin pastureland and enjoy extensive, uninterrupted views over the valley to the village of English Bicknor and the rolling hills beyond. Our three self-catering holiday accommodations, Forest View Cottage, Maple Lodge and Birch Lodge each sleep two people in a king sized bed although up to two children (in Forest View Cottage only) and an infant/child in the lodges can be accommodated on request and at a supplement - we are able to provide a travel cot, folding bed and high chair. Child supplement = 10 pounds per child per night All accomodations have a full sized, well equipped kitchen, dining area with table, lounge area with sofa and flat screened televisions and a fully equipped shower room. Maple Lodge also benefits from a bath and a balcony. All accomodations have a private terrace area and free parking and WiFi. Electric car charging points are available on request. Forest View Cottage is on two floors with a studio style kitchen/living room on the ground floor and a large bedroom with ensuite shower room upstairs. Maple and Birch Lodge are both on the ground floor only. Please be aware that Maple Lodge and Birch Lodge are both accessed through our garden. We have very friendly dogs that happily interact with our guests if their paths happen to cross however if you might find this a problem you may want to consider booking elsewhere.
We moved to the Forest of Dean in 2021 and feel extremely priveleged to live in such a stunning part of the world. I love being outside and enjoy walking the dogs in the forest, growing vegetables in our raised beds and orchard or looking after our chickens and ducks. I live with my sister and brother in law, Beth and Anthony in the main part of The Rock which orginally was a 16th century coaching inn which we are restoring little by little. Our three guest accommodations each sleeping 2 people are in our grounds, enjoying our tranquil garden with its uninterrupted 25 mile views over open fields and rolling hills.
Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), The Rock sits on a ridge with 25 mile views over open farm land to one side and the extensive Forest of Dean with miles of well marked footpaths to the otherside. A short stroll or cycle through the forest leads to Symonds Yat viewpoint known as one of the finest viewpoints in Southern England which perches over the River Wye below. This area is very popular for cycling, walking, caving, climbing and canoeing in addition to multiple tourist attractions for all ages. The forest is a haven for wildlife and birds with regular sightings of fallow deer, muntjac deer and wild boar with peregrine falcons and goshawks nesting on the cliffs at Symonds Yat. Within easy reach by car are Coleford, Monmouth and Ross of Wye - all historic market towns with many independent stores and quaint tearooms. Gloucester, Bristol and Cardiff are all within an hours drive.
