The settlement of Ammoudara, with its namesake beach, is located about 7 km from Heraklion and today forms a suburb of the city. Ammoudara took its name from the long sandy beach, which stretches for 7 kilometers from the Pankritio Stadium to the mouth of the Almyros River, making it one of the largest beaches in Crete. In some places, the beach’s width exceeds 200 meters. An underwater reef, at a distance of 40–50 meters from the shoreline, serves as a natural breakwater, thus providing the coast with valuable protection against erosion.
