Pyrgos village is the island’s first capital, a medieval fortress overlooking the entire island. For centuries, Pyrgos was the main commercial and municipal centre for the island of Santorini, and nowadays, evidence of its former glory can still be admired at the remains of its Kasteli. The kasteli was a typical fortification method of medieval Santorini, where the outer walls of the village’s houses were built tall, sturdy and close together so as to create a castle like citadel to defend against pirate attacks. What has remained of this Kasteli is today’s Pyrgos village. Strolling in its narrow alleys is a literal travel back in time, where you will feel surrounded by medieval warriors and knights, and you can almost hear the clamor of battles in the foreground.
