Maslinica is the only village and port on the western coast of the island Solta. Southern side of the bay Maslinica has beautiful landscape with pine trees and hidden rocky beaches, and in front of the bay is an archipelago of seven small islands. On the largest of them, Stipanska, an early Christian basilica was built in 5the and 6th century, and in the Middle Ages Benedictine monastery was built whose remains can still be seen nowadays. Maslinica began to populate in the 1703rd when an aristocratic family Marchi asked an approval from a Venetian governor for the establishment of a new settlement and for the construction of a castle with towers for defense of frequent pirate attacks. Martinis-Marchi castle is now converted into a luxury accommodation and restaurant "Conte Alberti". Around this baroque castle the fishing village with a picturesque stone houses was built. The inhabitants were mainly engaged in fishing and agriculture, while nowadays they are turning more and more towards hospitality. As a tourist destination, Maslinica draws lovers of nature, beaches and clear waters. Recently it is often visited by cyclists, rowers, boaters, lovers of diving, fishing and hunting.
