As elsewhere around the country the town’s cultural summer usually begins in late June and lasts through the end of the month of July. It features events such as theater performances, klapa concerts, exhibitions, poetry evenings and presentations of folk dancing communities. Some highlighted events include Fisherman’s Nights, Summer Carnival and the Evening of Kalalarga (Makarska’s special night). The majority of these events are free to enter and participate in. Since the majority of life in Makarska was related to the sea, the locals are experts in its flora and fauna. This is also a reason why they have not one but two museums dedicated to underwater life. One is the Malacological Museum, situated in a 16th-century Franciscan monastery (Franjevacki put 1), as its founding was a result of two monks with a passion for collecting and cataloging the seashells of the world. The other is Makarska’s Museum of Fish, Crabs and Seashells, located in Ulica Fra Filipa Grabovca bb. Both sites feature numerous exhibits and means to learn about the realm beneath the waves. Makarska also has its town museum and numerous art galleries with works by local artists.
