Punta Planka means “White Cape” due to its bright rocks. Surrounded by nature, located on the edge of the quiet village of Stivasnica. Direct access to the sea is just 100 meters down the road. The idyllic little bay of Stivasnica is even closer, and here too there is direct access to the sea. The peninsula reaches out into the Mediterranean farther than any other point in the entire Adriatic Sea. It demarcates the geographic and climate boundary between the North and South Adriatic. It is a meteorological divide, and you may enjoy sunshine here while a few kilometres South in Marina it may be overcast or rainy. At Punta Planka you stand on historic ground. Its earliest record dates back to as early as the 8th century B.C. Homer recorded in his “Iliad” that after the Trojan war Diomedes, one of the great Greek heroes, sailed around the cape. The cape has been known throughout history as hazardous in the navigation of ships. Several shipwrecks around the cape bear witness of sailors who didn’t master the winds and currents. Right on the cape stands a small chapel, built in 1324. It goes back to the legend of a miracle when St. John bishop of Trogir was in peril of stormy seas. He walked on water from the sinking ship onto the saving land of Punta Plunka, saving himself and the entire ship crew including the king of Hungary, Coloman, who was on board. In gratitude to God for saving all these lives the chapel was built. It is open at any time to anyone who wants to pray or simply have a look in.
