Gyula is located in the southeastern region of Hungary, in the county of Békés, and is the second most populous town in the count. Due to its proximity to Transylvania, it is also known as the Gateway to Transylvania. With a history dating back nearly 800 years, the city boasts many historical and cultural traditions and sights. The symbol of the city is the only intact brick castle in Central Europe, which tells the story of nearly 700 years of history in the Castle Museum. Throughout the year, there are many programs to choose from in the Gyula Castle, and the Gyula Castle Theater operates within the castle walls, providing cultural experiences. Gyula is known as the city of waters, as it is located on the left bank of the Fehér-Kőrös river, and its freshwater channel runs through the city, right in front of our Viktória Apartment. The Almásy Mansion Visitor Centre in Gyula was ranked among the 40 best museums in Europe in 2018. - The Almásy Mansion is the first one in Hungary to host a theatrical play in as early as 1746. Several generations of the Erkel family held recitals here, and Ferenc Erkel composed parts of several of his operas in the park of the Almásy Palace. Ten of the thirteen martyrs of Arad laid down their arms here. It was here that Mihály Munkácsy first became acquainted with the art of painting. The exhibition uses state-of-the-art interactive technology to reveal fascinating details and secrets of the daily lives of the aristocrats and staff who once lived here.
