Welcome to Shantala – Our Little Bit of Heaven
Our home dates back to the 1800s — some say even earlier. In 1927, an extension was added to the left-hand side of the house. If you look up at the front, you’ll see a small hump in the roof where the old and new sections meet.
The funds for that extension came from America. Nine members of the family lived here before emigrating between 1915 and 1920. Years later, in 1927, the money they sent home helped to build the new addition.
No scaffolds were used in building this house. The walls were made from large stones rolled into place, supported by stacked bushes until the walls reached roof height — a true testament to the hard work and ingenuity of the builders of the time.
In 1951, a wedding was held here that brought people from all over the parish. There was music, dancing, and plenty of white whiskey — known locally as potcheen — served in jam jars. The dancing took place in the sitting room by the fire, while the men gathered in what we still call the middle room, enjoying their potcheen and stories late into the night.
In 1952, the Stations were held in the house — a special West Cork tradition where neighbours gathered and the priest celebrated Mass in someone’s home. It was a big honour to host and remains a cherished memory.
Over twenty years ago, we built another extension at the back of the house — now home to the kitchen and sunroom. When we first got the house, there were no bathrooms, no running water, and no electricity. It was in a bad way, but we brought it back to life as best we could, keeping its old charm while adding a few comforts.
We love this house dearly and hope you love it too.
