Suir Valley Cottage lies in the heart of the south Tipperary countryside, an oasis of peace caught between ancient mountains and rolling fields. Some 200 years ago someone hoisted oaks beams onto cob walls and thatched them with straw, and since then the hearth of the cottage has warmed the hands of many generations. Located on a family run dairy farm, the cottage is safely contained in its own world within high walls and old farm sheds and is a 5 minute drive to our local village of Newcastle.
Hi, we are Tomás and Moira O Keeffe. We run a family dairy farm in south Tipperary. We have recently renovated this vernacular cottage ,where generations of my family lived. This partially thatched cottage was originally built around 1810 and subsequently added to in the 1930s and again in the 1970s. Suir Valley Cottage is a love story to a simpler time, when the only music came from a whistle and a fiddle, and the world stretched only as far as you could walk. Come through the half-door and into the old kitchen, sit at the table, pour yourself a cup of tea and warm yourself by the fire. Sleep, and wake up to the sound of birdsong echoing up and down the valley. As this is a working farm I will usually be close by if there are any concerns.
Suir Valley Cottage is located 3 km from Newcastle village,10 km from the busy town of Clonmel and is a 20 minute drive to Cahir where you can visit one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles or walk by the river to the fairytale Swiss Cottage. Start out on the Butler Trail from here. Drive north to the Rock of Cashel and sit where the High Kings of Munster once ruled. Cycle along the Victorian Ireland's railway in the Waterford Greenway-only a 30 minute car journey from us. Take a dip in the sea at Clonea strand to cool off after your cycle. Closer to home you can follow the river Suir along the Blueway. Bring your kayak and navigate the waters from Newcastle village into Clonmel. Then continue on foot/bicycle as far as Carrick on Suir. Go hiking in the nearby Knockmealdowns, Comeraghs or Galtee mountains or discover the pilgrims path of St. Declan's Way. Drive the breath taking Vee and onto Lismore to visit the castle with its visitors center and stunning gardens. Fish for a day in the river Suir and its tributary, the Tar( for an extra fee by arrangement). With the motorway located only 20 minutes away day trips to Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork or Limerick are easily done.
