I (Mala) was born in Calcutta and lived there until I turned three years old. My family moved all over the world until I turned 10, when we moved to the US. No matter where I went, India was always in my heart and a treasured memory. After graduating from college with my teaching degree I was invited back to Calcutta to live with a family who reached out the poor through education. The director gave me the job of teaching a 12 year old girl who's uncle had tried to sell her to a brothel. Fortunately the organization I was working with rescued her. That experience deeply impacted me. Today, that girl is happily married, and her children have gone to college.
Greg and I married shortly after that time in Calcutta and together we purposed to move to India to help rescue girls under the age of 18 who were sold into commercial sex exploitation. We lived in Mumbai worked for the first 5 years, and Greg developed a model that worked closely with law enforcement, the judiciary as well as government and private rehabilitation homes. In 2006 we started an NGO called Freedom Firm. Today, Freedom Firm has 6 offices strategically placed around India and over 1000 girls have been rescued from the worst situations known to mankind. Check it out online if you get the chance! Hundreds of stories give a glimpse of what the girls have endured, and how they are overcoming their suffering. There are beautiful stories of transformation and unbelievable courage. We invite you to join the fight against one of the greatest evils in our world. We'd love you to consider partnering with us for their freedom. A portion of the income Stumpfields goes to the work of Freedom Firm.

Stumpfields is not a place that was built first and foremost as a bed and breakfast. We built it as a home for our family. We moved to Ooty in 2005 and bought land that overlooked mountain ranges and tea plantations. As soon as we saw the land,we knew it would the perfect place to raise our 4 young children, but there was no road access! In fact, the earliest bags of sand and cement were brought in by donkeys following a narrow trail from the Kotaghiri Road! Over the next few years, we carved a half kilometer driveway along the face of the mountain. We leveled sites for the houses, barn and riding ring. We dug wells, piped water 500 meters from the valley below and brought in electricity. We designed and built Stumpfields with a nod to the architecture of Ooty when it first became a hill station.
For many years, Stumpfields embodied all the love and goodness that enveloped our family. We spent evening hours playing games and reading good books around the large open fireplace. My daughter Abbi loved sliding down the spiral staircase banister (much to my dismay!). The children built forts in the forests, climbed trees, ate edible forest plants and rode horses! Together we played volleyball on the lawn and hiked all the mountains around us. Stumpfields was an oasis for our family, a precious haven away from all the pressures of life. Although now our children and grown and have lives in other places, we all still call Stumpfields "home".
Today, we love to share our precious home with you our guests, so that you too can experience the magic of the cloud play, the hover of the hawks, the wildness of cliff and forest, and the patchwork of green tea plantations. Our prayer is that you experience deep refreshment and joy as you bask in a moment of quiet and natural beauty. May you be blessed.
Informace o okolí
Jus 7 kilometers outside of Ooty town, this property is close to all the major tourist highlights but is secluded and remote at the same time. Away from the hustle and bustle of Ooty town, Stumpfields is a serene and peaceful retreat, overlooking tea estates, wild forest and mountain ridges. Stumpfields is a total of 2 separate houses on a 1.5 acre property.
We have staff here in the day and a night watchman as well. Security cameras are used in multiple locations.
We urge only resilient, nature loving, independent, resourceful, adventuresome people to book a holiday here. Its a wild and steep terrain, and at night you will not hear the noise of traffic, but rather the sound of wind in the trees, owls in the dark, rain on the roofs, and bird and animal calls. While the evenings may have firelight, candles and electricity, once the lights are out, it will be pitch dark all around. When skies are clear the stars and moon are perhaps the most beautiful you will ever see. It's something about being in the mountains 8,000 ft high, with no pollution covering the atmosphere. Other times of the year, especially in the monsoon, it's just incredibly dark. The mountains of Ooty are also very cool year-round, especially at night. While the indoors are warm and cozy pack a pair of slippers and a sweater or two!
We are close to all major tourist attractions as well, Doddabetta Peak, Tea Park, Tea Factory, Botanical Gardens, Rose Garden and Ooty Lake are all between 1 and 7 kms away from us. The Tea Park is just a walk through the forest!
