Assigned to the Friars Minor of Saint Francis of Assisi (Reformed) and consecrated to Santa Maria del Rimedio, Prince Bartolomeo Sambiase, an enlightened feudal lord of his time, wanted it as an expression of his prestige. He had it built in front of the castle on the hill outside the city walls, where an ancient Franciscan hermitage already existed.
Completed in 1698, it was only in 1702 that Pope Clement XI, personally urged, overcame the negative outcome of a difficult apostolic investigation and authorized its opening. Suppressed by the Napoleonic authorities in 1809, it passed into private ownership in 1866.
Fires and earthquakes reduced it to ruins after attacks by French artillery had promoted its degradation, but a careful restoration in the 1980s restored it to its original beauty. Today, one can enjoy an intimate, almost unreal atmosphere in the interplay of light, stones, sky, and sea, always paying tribute to a mystical, fulfilling serenity.
