In Florence in the Middle Ages, intersections were called canti, that is to say, corners. The Canto degli Aranci gets its name from the garden of a historical palace which was the place where poets met in summertime to challenge each other in poetry competitions. Hello! For many years, our dream was to open a bed & breakfast, and now that dream has come true. About ten years ago, we started working in the world of catering and event organization in Milan, and that is when we started to dream. Our experience includes working abroad: we managed a quality Italian restaurant in the heart of Paris for two years, and our work there was greatly appreciated. Then the moment came to return to Italy, to realize our dream, and we chose Florence, symbol of art, beauty and culture, loved by Italians and foreigners alike. It has the ideal human dimension for those who want to get to know its spirit and soul. Thus we created Canto degli Aranci, our bed & breakfast in the heart of Florence. Canto degli Aranci is located in the heart of the Santa Croce neighborhood, one of Florence’s historical four quarters. In the 13th century, this area grew up around what was called the ‘Arno island,’ because two branches of the Arno River surrounded what is today Piazza Santa Croce. Here you can find a magnificent Franciscan basilica, and this is also the piazza where for over five centuries the historical Florentine soccer game has been played among the city’s four quarters. Around the basilica is a maze of little streets with historical names that tell the story of the neighborhood and its inhabitants: patrician palaces, small museums with great masterpieces, craftsmen’s workshops that continue the ancient trades of once upon a time. In the evening, the same streets become the destination for Florentine nightlife with lively pubs, meeting places and events. The Santa Croce neighborhood is the crossroads between the medieval roots of Florence and its contemporary culture.
