Livigno boasts a fascinating history that reflects its remoteness and the resilience of its people.
Situated at the heart of Europe’s alpine roof, Livigno is geographically unique. The river Spöl, a tributary of the Danube, originates in the valley, while the Rhine, another of Europe’s great rivers, begins nearby in Switzerland's Engadine Valley.
Until the 1960s, Livigno was largely cut off during winter months, with its high altitude and brief summers making agriculture a challenge. Historically subordinate to Bormio, Livigno’s determined efforts to build an international reputation as an eco-tourism destination have transformed its fortunes. Today, Livigno’s population surpasses that of Bormio, a testament to its growth and development.
Its isolated location and distinctive geography secured Livigno tax privileges as far back as the Middle Ages, and it continues to enjoy duty-free status to this day.
Despite being one of the most remote places in Europe, with the nearest airport 200 kilometers away, Livigno’s seclusion is integral to its charm. The exceptional hospitality of its residents only enhances its appeal.
Over the past three decades, significant changes have shaped Livigno. The town center now sees more traffic, although large pedestrianized zones provide respite. A construction boom has occurred, but the architecture remains harmonious, with many historic buildings beautifully preserved. Meanwhile, Trepalle, with its small parish of just 500 residents, has retained its distinct and timeless atmosphere, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has changed far less over time.
