Perched on Mount Marone, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Palermo, is the wonderful medieval village of Gangi. This small town is the protagonist of a stony setting of houses adorned with flowers, wrought-iron balconies, rich portals, eighteen churches, stately palaces and artistic treasures scattered in the typical alleys. Gangi is one of 14 municipalities covered by the Madonie Regional Natural Park (UNESCO Geopark), an area in the heart of Sicily suspended between the sea and the mountains, and was elected Italy's Most Beautiful Village in 2014. Gangi is a place rich in architectural and artistic heritage: the 14th-century city walls enclose the upper part of the town, which preserves the most significant buildings such as the mother church and Bongiorno-Li Destri palace. Gang's menu boasts several dishes: not to be missed are Gangi's caciocavallo, a first- or second-salt sheep's milk cheese seasoned with peppercorns, and dried sausage, as well as "ccu maccu" pasta, baked mutton with potatoes, and the traditional "mastacuttè," cookies made of flour, sugar and prickly pear juice. Gangi is a strategic point for making historical-artistic and gastronomic excursions to nearby Madonie towns, such as Castelbuono (32 km away) with its three museums and renowned restaurants, Cefalù (53 km away), take nature walks or horseback rides, to Piano Battaglia (28 km away) or to Petralia Sottana where the Madonie Adventure Park is located (16 km away).
